Why Shopify with Imbatik if you sell D2C food?
D2C food is one of the most regulated and complex sectors: mandatory nutrition labeling, expiration date management, cold chain, AESAN regulations, allergens. A generalist doesn’t have this under control.
Compliant nutrition labeling
EU Regulation 1169/2011 requires nutrition information, allergens, ingredients, batch, origin and specific statements on every product page. We implement them as editable metafields in Shopify, with a template that's compliant by default. No risk of AESAN penalties.
Expiration date and batch management
Food has expiration dates and batches that need tracking. We set up stock management by batch, alerts for upcoming expirations (days in advance) and automatic discounts on products nearing their expiration date (cutting waste by up to 60%). Without this, you take real losses on every inventory count.
Shopify Subscriptions for recurring revenue
The perfect offering for D2C food (coffee, snacks, supplements, wine, gourmet boxes): a discounted monthly subscription. Native Shopify Subscriptions (no app) + integration with Bold Subscriptions or Recharge depending on volume. LTV multiplies compared to one-off sales.
How we build your food Shopify store
Every food brand has its own specific circumstances (expiration, cold chain, regulations, subscriptions). We tailor the setup to your exact situation.
Regulatory + product briefing
Product analysis (perishable or not, needs refrigeration, requires health registration), D2C competitors in your vertical, target markets, AESAN requirements specific to your product, and catalog structure.
Catalog setup + regulatory metafields
Product structure with mandatory metafields (nutrition information, allergens, ingredients, batch, storage, origin). A product page template that displays these fields by default in compliance with EU Regulation 1169/2011. NutritionInformation schema.
Logistics + expiration dates + cold chain
Fulfillment setup based on your product: a standard operator (Shipheroes, ByHours) for shelf-stable goods, a cold chain operator (Cool Logistics, Logistics for Foodies) for refrigerated/frozen goods. Batch management with expiration dates, alerts and automatic discounts.
Subscriptions + launch
Shopify Subscriptions configured, discounted monthly / bimonthly plans, a customer portal to manage subscriptions, and Klaviyo integration to win back churned customers. Launch with Meta + TikTok Ads if it fits your target audience.

New Shopify food store
Complete setup: a theme tailored to food (visual, crave-worthy, story-driven), a catalog with nutrition metafields, batch and expiration date management, native subscriptions and critical integrations (Klaviyo, Meta, logistics operator).
AESAN + EU regulatory compliance
Mandatory nutrition labeling (EU Regulation 1169/2011), allergen declarations, ingredients in descending order, authorized health claims (only those in EU Regulation 432/2012) and product origin. No risk of penalties.
Shopify Subscriptions
The ideal subscription model for recurring food purchases (monthly coffee, snacks, supplements, weekly gourmet boxes). Native Shopify Subscriptions + advanced apps if you need customizable plans. A customer portal to manage deliveries, pause and make changes.
Batch + expiration date management
Stock by batch in Shopify, configurable alerts (X days before expiration), automatic discounts on products nearing expiration (Bold Discounts or Shopify Flow rules). Cuts waste by up to 60%.
Cold chain fulfillment
If your product requires refrigeration or freezing, we integrate specialized operators (Cool Logistics, Logistics for Foodies, Sendcloud with qualified carriers). Insulated packaging + temperature tracking. Critical for wine, cheese, cured meats and ice cream.
Glovo / Uber Eats integration
For brands with a physical store or local kitchen (gourmet, bakery, pastry, prepared meals), we integrate Shopify online ordering + Glovo / Uber Eats local delivery. Stock syncs across channels to prevent overselling.

Frequently asked questions about Shopify for D2C food brands
Does my product need health registration to sell online?
It depends on the type of product. Most packaged food products require a General Health Registry Number for Food Businesses and Foods (RGSEAA), managed by AESAN. Some products (supplements, novel foods, certain food supplements) require additional registrations. We'll point you in the right direction in our first meeting, but you handle the registration with AESAN yourself — we're not a regulatory consultancy, we're a digital agency specialized in food e-commerce.
How do you handle mandatory nutrition labeling?
We implement specific metafields on every Shopify product for: nutrition information per 100g/100ml (energy, fat, saturates, carbohydrates, sugars, protein, salt), allergen declarations (the EU's 14), ingredients in descending order, and specific claims (gluten-free, vegan, organic, etc.) under EU Regulation 432/2012 (authorized claims). The theme displays these fields automatically on the product page. Without this, you could face an AESAN penalty.
What about the cold chain? How do you handle it?
If your product requires refrigeration (4-8°C) or freezing (-18°C), we integrate fulfillment with specialized operators: Cool Logistics, Logistics for Foodies, NACEX Frío, Sending Frío. Insulated packaging (polystyrene boxes + ice packs), temperature tracking with some operators, and short delivery times (24-48h max for refrigerated goods). Not every operator offers cold shipping — choosing the right one is critical.
Is Shopify Subscriptions compliant with recurring payment regulations?
Yes, it complies with PSD2 and SEPA. Customers can cancel or pause their subscription at any time (mandatory in Europe). We also set up automatic reminders 3 days before each charge (which boosts retention and reduces disputes).
How do you handle products with a short shelf life?
We set up stock management by batch with an associated expiration date. Shopify Flow (free, included in Advanced+ plans) runs automatic rules: 'if a batch is less than 30 days from expiring, apply a 15% discount'; 'if less than 15 days, apply 30%'. You sell the stock before it goes to waste. Cuts waste by up to 60%.
How much does a Shopify food store cost?
It depends a lot on the product (perishable or not, whether it needs refrigeration, regulatory complexity), the number of SKUs, the markets you activate, subscriptions and logistics integrations. A complete store with full compliance and subscriptions: mid-range. After the initial briefing we give you an exact quote.
Do you only sell in Spain or internationally too?
We handle both. Selling food to France, Italy or Germany is possible with Shopify Markets — setting up local language, currency, OSS taxes and, critically, complying with each country's food regulations (which sometimes go beyond EU Regulation 1169 with national annexes). We'll guide you on additional regulations when we discuss target markets.
Do I need to register as a limited company (SL) to sell food?
Not necessarily. You can sell as a sole trader if your volume is small and your product falls within the permitted categories. But we recommend an SL for a serious D2C food business because of: asset separation, clearer regulation, greater customer trust and better terms with logistics operators. The decision is yours and your tax advisor's — we're just raising it.
Can I market food with Meta/TikTok Ads, or are there restrictions?
There are specific restrictions. Meta and TikTok prohibit ads with unauthorized health claims, therapeutic claims, weight-loss before/after images, etc. For standard D2C food (coffee, snacks, wine, gourmet boxes), no problem. For food supplements there are serious restrictions — we'll guide you on what's acceptable.
